Critical Analysis The Real Gift of Tan Malaka: Logic, Not Atheism ; Blacklist Malaka Project, Sabda PS, and Ferry Irwandi

An investigative examination of Malaka Project, Perguruan Tinggi Malaka, and the epistemic dangers of branding activism as education reform — without the institutional experience to back it up.

What Tan Malaka Actually Wrote

Tan Malaka wrote Madilog — Materialisme, Dialektika, dan Logika — in a prison cell. He was not writing a manifesto for atheism. He was writing a manual for how to think.

His argument was directed at a specific pathology: the Indonesian tendency to accept claims on authority, tradition, and social pressure rather than evidence and reason. He called this the enemy of liberation — not religion itself, but the avoidance of scrutiny.

Bad epistemology is not the property of religion. It inhabits secular tech Twitter threads, wellness pseudoscience, and atheist forums that dress personal bias as "rational inquiry." The spirit of Tan Malaka is not "abandon religion." It is: think clearly, whatever you believe.

Malaka Project: The Anatomy of an Edtech Brand

Launched formally in October 2023 at Djakarta Theater, Malaka Project positions itself as a digital education platform building what it calls Masyarakat Baru — a New Society — through logical, critical, and empathetic discourse. By September 2025, its YouTube channel had surpassed 1 million subscribers.

📌 Malaka Project won the "Konten Kreator Inspiratif untuk Perkembangan Indonesia" award at IDEAWARD 2024, organized by tvOne. It has run scholarship programs with Kapal Api and partnered with telecommunications company Tri. These are not the credentials of a fringe movement — they are those of a well-funded content brand.

The Founders

Malaka Project has nine founders with a wide range of backgrounds. The key figures driving its evolution toward an actual university are:

Founder & CEO

Ferry Irwandi

Content Creator → Public Intellectual → Institutional Builder

Born December 16, 1991 in Jambi. Minangkabau heritage. Active in theatre since secondary school as actor and playwright.

• Education: STAN (Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara); Master's degree from Central Queensland University, Australia.
• Career: ~10 years as a civil servant (PNS) in communications at the Ministry of Finance. Left in November 2022 to pursue content creation full-time.
• Platform: 1.9M YouTube subscribers, 2.5M Instagram followers.
• Philosophy: Self-described Stoic since 2017. Frequently publishes political critique, including of the Indonesian government's response to civilian demonstrations.
• Legal: Named in TNI cyber patrol findings in September 2025; denied contact from TNI and stated he was prepared to face legal process.
• Funding: Led a donation drive raising over Rp10 billion for Sumatra flood victims.

Sabda PS

Sabda Putra Subekti · b. 1 February 1979 · Founder, Zenius Education

Publicly carried the label "IQ 160" in Malaka Project content. Now co-proposing a university system built on the philosophy that selection mechanisms are obstacles.

• Education: Enrolled in Teknik Informatika (Computer Science) at ITB. Left without completing the degree — citing structural dissatisfaction and, memorably, difficulty waking up for morning classes. Took online courses in Mathematics & Philosophy (University of London) and Anthropology (Oxford) while enrolled at ITB.
• Zenius: Founded in 2004 with Medy Suharta and Wisnu Subekti. Began as an offline tutoring service distributing learning materials on DVD/CD-ROM. Pivoted online in 2010. Received investment from MDI Ventures (Telkom), Northstar Group (Patrick Walujo), Alpha JWC, Openspace Ventures, and Beacon Venture Capital.
• Zenius Collapse: PHK (mass layoffs) of 200+ employees in May 2022. Further layoffs in August 2022 and February 2023. Operations halted January 4, 2024 — after 20 years. Official reason: "operational challenges." At its November 2023 peak before closure, Zenius had only 4.1 million monthly site visits vs Ruang Guru's 21.9 million and Brainly's 43.8 million.
• Personal: Married co-founder Cania Citta in 2019. Announced divorce May 30, 2024.
• New venture: Now co-proposing Perguruan Tinggi Malaka with Ferry Irwandi.

Cania Citta Irlanie

Political Activist · Journalist · Public Speaker

Born January 14, 1995 in Depok. Batak-Javanese heritage. Raised in an Islamic cultural context; now identifies as Christian.

• Education: Alumni of Political Science, Universitas Indonesia (UI).
• Role: Co-founder of Malaka Project alongside Ferry Irwandi. Has spoken at UNESA (August 2025), Makassar International Writers Festival (2025), and multiple university events on educational futures.
• Publications: Author of Makanya, Mikir! — a book on critical thinking frameworks.
• Media presence: Known for direct political commentary; was a podcast guest and has written original music ("Sendu," November 2024).

Other Named Co-Founders

Jerome Polin (science/math content creator), Dea Anugrah (writer, journalist), Fathia Izzati, Rizky Ardi Prakoso, Aurelia Vizal, and Angellie Nabilla. Each brings a content creation background; none has a formal track record in institutional higher education governance.

The Zenius Collapse: A Timeline That Matters

Before assessing whether Sabda PS should build a new university, it is worth examining the trajectory of the last institution he ran and why it failed.

Critical Finding

Exam prep ≠ higher education governance

Zenius's entire 20-year business model was supplementary exam tutoring helping students pass UTBK to enter universities that already existed. This is a valuable service. It is not the same as founding, accrediting, staffing, financially sustaining, and academically governing a degree-granting university.

The skill transfer between these two domains is approximately as direct as the skill transfer between being an excellent taxi driver and designing a city's transit infrastructure. Both involve movement. The competencies are almost entirely different.

There is no evidence in the public record that Sabda PS has ever been responsible for curriculum accreditation, faculty governance, institutional accreditation by BAN-PT, student financial aid administration, or managing the multi-year academic continuity that students depend on when they enroll in a degree program.

The Dunning-Kruger Problem in Indonesian Education Reform

The Dunning-Kruger effect describes a cognitive bias in which people with limited knowledge in a domain overestimate their own competence precisely because they lack the framework to recognize what they don't know. It is not a comment on general intelligence. High general intelligence, as in the case of someone labeled "IQ 160," makes overconfidence more articulate, not less dangerous.

💡 Frustration with a system is not the same as competence to replace it. Partial success within a system's margins tutoring students to enter existing universities is not evidence of competence to build a competing system. This distinction matters enormously when students commit years of their life and often their family's savings.

The Selection Filter Problem

Eliminating entrance requirements is not democratization by default. Selection mechanisms exist to match students' preparedness with program demands and to protect students from enrolling in programs they are not ready for. A university that accepts anyone without any baseline assessment must then either fail unprepared students (harmful) or lower its standards to ensure completion (also harmful). There are legitimate models for open-access education, but they require extraordinary pedagogical infrastructure, not just the abolition of gates.

The Teacher Credential Problem

Farmers, artists, and activists have genuine knowledge worth transmitting. Experiential knowledge is real knowledge. But a "university" that positions these roles as equivalent to academic researchers without explaining how it will produce research-grade graduates is conflating very different epistemic activities. The question is not whether farmers know things. It is whether a degree from Perguruan Tinggi Malaka will be recognized by employers, graduate schools, and professional licensing bodies and what happens to students if it isn't.

The Scale Risk Problem

A failed content platform is recoverable. Students can find other YouTube channels. A failed university affects cohorts of human beings who made multi-year commitments based on promises of credentials. The asymmetry of risk between a content experiment and an institutional experiment is not a detail. It is the entire ethical question.

Religion Does Not Cause Bad Reasoning. Bad Epistemology Does.

One of the most persistent errors in Indonesian public intellectual discourse is the conflation of religious belief with epistemological failure. This conflation is itself an epistemological failure.

The Quran does not claim the sun orbits the earth. People who needed it to say that made it say that. The Bible does not endorse a flat earth. Commentators who could not separate metaphor from mechanism made it say that. These failures belong to motivated reasoning — a universal human cognitive pattern that appears with equal frequency in secular discourse.

Malaka Project's explicit framing — "ateis maupun beragama, yang penting CCA!" (atheist or religious, what matters is Critical, Careful, and Analytical thinking) — gets this right in principle. The question is whether the platform consistently applies that standard to its own claims, or whether the critical lens is deployed selectively on targets that are ideologically convenient.

We do not need Indonesians to become atheists to become rational. We need Indonesians to become rigorous. Those are not the same thing. Rigor is the actual inheritance of Tan Malaka.

The Only Project Worth Building

Tan Malaka's real gift was not a political alignment, a religious position, or a content brand. It was a single transferable skill: the ability to interrogate premises, demand evidence proportional to the claim, and separate what a text or institution actually does from what it claims to do.

Applied honestly, that skill should be directed at Malaka Project itself — at whether a content platform with a charismatic founder and a million YouTube subscribers is the same thing as an institution prepared to take responsibility for the educational futures of thousands of students.

Vision without relevant institutional experience and evidence is not disruption. It is expensive guesswork — with other people's futures as the currency.

Support real education reform. Demand pilots, data, and humility — not charisma and radical reinvention. The spirit of Tan Malaka is not "abandon structure." It is: think clearly, whatever you believe, and hold your own projects to the same epistemic standard you hold everyone else's.

That is the only project worth building.
