INIT-6 VENTURE CAPITAL : Deep-Dive Investigative Report Backed By Achmad Zaky founder of Bukalapak

INIT-6 VENTURE CAPITAL : Deep-Dive Investigative Report Backed By Achmad Zaky founder of Bukalapak

I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report presents a comprehensive investigative analysis of Init-6, an Indonesian early-stage venture capital firm founded in 2020 by former Bukalapak co-founders Achmad Zaky and Nugroho Herucahyono. The report examines the fund's founding narrative, team background, portfolio composition, investment patterns, portfolio company performance, and the structural risks posed to LPs and the broader startup ecosystem.

Key findings include:

•       Both founding partners are graduates of the same department (Teknik Informatika, ITB) and the fund's earliest investments show a strong bias toward founders from the same institutional background

•       Eduka System, Init-6's first and flagship portfolio company, appears to have ceased active operations, with its primary domain (edukasystem.com) hijacked or expired and its last verifiable YouTube activity in March 2024

•       Of 26 portfolio companies listed, 2 are already marked 'Exited' (Schoters, Sekolahmu), and several others show minimal public activity, raising questions about survivorship

•       Fund AUM (Assets Under Management) has never been publicly disclosed, and at launch, Zaky confirmed capital came solely from General Partners with no Limited Partners, raising transparency concerns

•       The pattern of investing primarily in ITB Informatics-connected founders without public disclosure of this preference constitutes a potential conflict of interest and a due-diligence red flag for co-investors

•       There is no public evidence of regulatory filings, fund structure disclosures, or audited financial statements available to the public

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: This report is a good-faith investigative summary based on publicly available information. It does not constitute legal advice, financial advice, or a formal securities analysis. All conclusions are analytical inferences from open-source data. Allegations of money laundering are unverified and are presented only as a hypothesis for investigative consideration, not as established fact. Readers are urged to conduct independent due diligence.

II. FOUNDER BACKGROUND & INSTITUTIONAL ROOTS

2.1 Achmad Zaky (Founding Partner)

•       Born: August 24, 1986, Sragen, Central Java

•       Career: Co-founded Bukalapak in 2010 together with Nugroho Herucahyono and Fajrin Rasyid. Served as CEO from 2010 until January 2020 when he stepped down amid the company's restructuring ahead of its IPO

•       Controversy: In February 2019, a tweet referencing 'presiden baru' (new president) in the context of Indonesia's R&D budget sparked the viral #UninstallBukalapak campaign. Zaky apologized publicly and met with President Joko Widodo at the State Palace to clarify. The episode contributed to reputational pressure that preceded his departure from Bukalapak

•       Init-6 Founding: Post-Bukalapak, Zaky described his motivation as wanting to 'reboot' the startup ecosystem post-COVID-19, drawing on the UNIX command 'init 6' which triggers a system reboot

2.2 Nugroho Herucahyono / 'Xinuc' (Founding Partner)

•       Born: March 7, 1987, Karanganyar, Central Java

•       Education: Teknik Informatika (Informatics Engineering), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), enrolled 2004 — same cohort as Zaky

•       Career: Co-founded Bukalapak alongside Zaky and Fajrin Rasyid in 2010. Served as CTO of Bukalapak and previously as CTO of Suitmedia (digital agency). Was also SysAdmin at ITB during his university years. Active in Ruby.id, the Indonesian Ruby programming community

•       He stepped down from Bukalapak as CTO in March 2020, the same period Zaky left

•       At Init-6: Listed as Founding Partner. Publicly stated the rationale for Showwcase investment was the gap in platforms for tech talent to 'connect, share knowledge, and find opportunities'

2.3 Supporting Team

•       Arif Medianto: Managing Partner (LinkedIn: arifmedianto)

•       Rexi Christopher: Venture Partner (LinkedIn: rexi-christopher)

•       Teuku Al Hafidh: Associate Director (LinkedIn: teukualhafidh)

None of the supporting team members have LinkedIn profiles that indicate a Teknik Informatika ITB background from public data, suggesting the ITB IF concentration is at the founding partner level — and expressed through the deal flow selection, not the team itself.

2.4 The ITB Informatika Network Effect

Both Zaky and Xinuc are graduates of Teknik Informatika ITB, Class of 2004. Bukalapak itself was founded inside ITB by ITB students. Init-6's very first investment — Eduka System — was a startup founded by current and former ITB students, incubated at LPiK ITB and The Greater Hub SBM-ITB, housed at Jalan Ganesha No. 10 (ITB campus address).

While Init-6 publicly states it is 'industry agnostic' and invests in 'great founders' without specifying sector or institution preferences, the pattern of early investments and the founders' deep embeddedness in the ITB Informatics alumni network warrants scrutiny from co-investors and LPs.

OBSERVATION: The fund describes itself as industry-agnostic with no stated preference for founder background. However, its first investment was an ITB campus startup, its two founders are from the same ITB department and cohort, and early portfolio companies show disproportionate ITB-linked founding teams. This pattern, undisclosed publicly, constitutes an unacknowledged selection bias that could affect portfolio diversity and risk distribution.

III. FUND STRUCTURE & TRANSPARENCY ANALYSIS

3.1 Legal Entity & Registration

Init-6's official website lists its address as: One Pacific Place, 15th Floor, Jl. Jend Sudirman Kav 52-53, SCBD Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta Selatan — a premium Grade A office address. The website domain is init-6.fund (a .fund TLD).

No public information is available on the Indonesian legal entity name (PT or CV registration), OJK registration number as a venture capital firm, or formal fund structure (LP/GP allocation). This is a significant transparency gap for a firm that has publicly invested in at least 26 companies across six years.

3.2 Fund Size / AUM: Undisclosed

At Init-6's launch in April 2020, Achmad Zaky explicitly stated in an interview with DailySocial.id that: (1) the fund's capital came entirely from General Partners, with no Limited Partners at that time; and (2) he did not wish to disclose the amount of capital under management.

As of the date of this report (June 2026), no public disclosure of fund size, AUM, or LP composition has been located in any public database including Crunchbase, PitchBook, or Tracxn. This is atypical for a fund that has made 26+ investments over six years and positions itself as a professional institutional VC.

RED FLAG: A venture capital fund operating for six years across 26+ portfolio companies with no publicly disclosed AUM, LP structure, or OJK regulatory filing information is unusual. Legitimate VC funds operating in Indonesia are subject to OJK Regulation No. 35/POJK.04/2020 on venture capital and are required to register. Absence of public regulatory confirmation warrants verification by any co-investor or LP.

3.3 Investment Thesis vs. Actual Pattern

Stated thesis: 'We love technical founders with a passion for solving big problems... industry agnostic investor who primarily invests in early-stage rounds.'

Actual pattern observed across 26 portfolio companies:

•       EdTech: Eduka System, Codemi, Schoters, Sekolahmu, Dibimbing (5 companies — 19.2% of portfolio)

•       Cloud/SaaS: Awanio, IDCloudHost, Algobash, Ledgerowl, Qiscus (5 companies — 19.2%)

•       Fintech: Monit, Skorlife, Flik, Ringkas, Finnix, Dbank (6 companies — 23.1%)

•       Consumer/D2C: Gently, Torch, UMA, One% Nutrition (4 companies — 15.4%)

•       Others: Bioma, Waste4Change, Runchise, Imajin, Setoko, Showwcase (6 companies — 23.1%)

The portfolio evolved significantly from early EdTech/Tech bias to consumer brands (D2C) in 2023-2025, suggesting either a pivot in thesis or opportunistic deal flow. This is not inherently negative, but undisclosed thesis changes create LP expectation mismatches.

V. EDUKA SYSTEM: DEEP-DIVE FAILURE ANALYSIS

5.1 Company Profile

PT Eduka Teknologi Indonesia (Eduka System) was founded in November 2018 by four co-founders: Muhammad Habibi Haidir, Ahmad Faiz Sahupala (CEO), Sodiko Hidayad, and Daniel Ryan Levyson. It was incubated at LPiK ITB and The Greater Hub SBM-ITB, with offices at Jalan Ganesha No. 10, Bandung — the ITB campus address.

The company offered an online exam preparation platform (tryout) for Indonesian university entrance exams (UTBK/SBMPTN). In its first seven months of operation, it claimed 300,000-800,000 registered users — a remarkable growth figure, suggesting strong product-market fit in the high-stakes Indonesian university admissions market.

Eduka System was Init-6's very first portfolio company, funded in April 2020 in a Seed round of undisclosed amount. The Wikipedia entry for Eduka System explicitly states it was 'Init-6's first portfolio.'

5.2 Evidence of Failure / Dormancy

•       PRIMARY INDICATOR: The domain edukasystem.com, as of mid-2026, redirects to what appears to be a gambling/lottery website (teslatoto), a classic sign of an expired domain that has been purchased and repurposed by unrelated parties — a definitive indicator that the original company no longer controls its primary web presence

Owler.com data shows estimated annual revenue of under $1M and fewer than 10 employees, with the last company news being a YouTube video from March 27, 2024

•       Tracxn profile shows no funding rounds beyond the initial April 2020 Seed round from Init-6; zero subsequent fundraising in six years suggests the company never achieved Series A traction

•       The company's LinkedIn page still exists but shows no recent hiring or product announcements

ptn.edukasystem.com (the product subdomain) is reported as 'offline or not operational' by website monitoring services, with no WHOIS data available

•       The TikTok account @edukasystem shows content exclusively from 2021-2022 with no subsequent activity

CONCLUSION: Eduka System, Init-6's flagship first investment and a company with ITB institutional roots, has effectively ceased operations. The primary domain has been hijacked post-expiry. No Series A or follow-on funding was raised. The last product activity appears to be 2022-2023. This is a confirmed portfolio failure that Init-6 has not publicly acknowledged on its website, which still lists Eduka System as an active portfolio company with a clickable (but broken) link to edukasystem.com.

5.3 The Eduka System Red Flag for Init-6

The fact that Init-6's website still prominently lists Eduka System as an active portfolio company — with a link to a domain now serving gambling content — raises a governance concern. Either:

•       Init-6 is not monitoring the status of its own portfolio companies (operational failure), or

•       Init-6 is aware of the failure but has chosen not to update its public portfolio page (transparency failure)

Either scenario is problematic for a VC firm that positions itself as an active, engaged partner to its portfolio companies.

VI. THE MONEY LAUNDERING HYPOTHESIS: ASSESSMENT

6.1 Context of the Allegation

The hypothesis raised in this investigation is whether Init-6 could function as a vehicle for money laundering, particularly given: (1) undisclosed fund size; (2) no public LP disclosure; (3) investments in companies with unclear revenues; (4) concentrated founder network; and (5) the failure of its first investment without public acknowledgment.

6.2 Indicators That Could Raise Concern

•       No public AUM disclosure across six years of operation despite 26+ investments, which is unusual even for emerging-market micro-VCs

•       Initial fund capital was confirmed to come exclusively from the General Partners themselves with no LPs — an unusual fund structure that limits independent oversight

•       Several portfolio companies have no public revenue data, minimal employee counts, and limited verifiable business activity

•       The concentration of investments in a single alumni network could indicate a closed ecosystem where fund flows are difficult for outsiders to audit

•       Eduka System's domain expiry and apparent abandonment without any public writedown or acknowledgment is atypical even for failed startups

6.3 Indicators That Argue Against the Hypothesis

•       Several portfolio companies have raised follow-on funding from credible co-investors including East Ventures, Investible, GMO Venture Partners, Saison Capital, and Y Combinator — these firms conduct independent due diligence that would likely surface structural irregularities

•       Achmad Zaky is a high-profile public figure with significant reputational capital; he has also served on the Board of Trustees of ITB, implying institutional accountability beyond the fund

•       The Init-6 office is at One Pacific Place, SCBD — a verifiable Grade A business address that represents a real operational presence

•       Investment news has been reported by credible Indonesian and regional media (DealStreet Asia, Tech in Asia, Dailysocial.id, Bisnis.com) with specific companies and rounds named

•       The portfolio includes companies in regulated sectors (fintech: Skorlife, Monit) that require OJK oversight of investee companies, providing indirect regulatory visibility

6.4 Analytical Verdict on Money Laundering Hypothesis

ANALYTICAL VERDICT: Based on available public evidence, there is INSUFFICIENT DATA to support a money laundering characterization of Init-6. The indicators of concern (opacity, no AUM disclosure, one failed portfolio company without acknowledgment) are consistent with poor governance practices common in early-stage VC operations in emerging markets, but do not meet the threshold of evidence required to substantiate a money laundering allegation. The appropriate characterization is: Init-6 exhibits significant GOVERNANCE OPACITY and should be subject to enhanced due diligence by any LP or co-investor.

Any serious investigation of money laundering would require access to: (a) Pusat Pelaporan dan Analisis Transaksi Keuangan (PPATK) transaction records; (b) OJK registration and audit files; (c) bank account records of the GP entity; (d) corporate registry filings from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. None of these are available to the public.

VII. STRUCTURAL RISK FLAGS FOR CO-INVESTORS & LPs

Article content

VIII. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE INVESTORS & CO-INVESTORS

8.1 Due Diligence Checklist

•       Verify OJK registration: Request the exact registration number under OJK's modal ventura regulations and verify independently at ojk.go.id

•       Request fund financial statements: Audited balance sheet, income statement, and portfolio valuation methodology for minimum the last two fiscal years

•       Portfolio status verification: Conduct independent checks on all 26 portfolio companies including domain status, employee count via LinkedIn, and last filing with Ministry of Law and Human Rights

•       LP list and commitment confirmation: Request full LP disclosure or, at minimum, confirmation that LPs exist and their total committed capital

•       Exit documentation: For Schoters and Sekolahmu exits, request purchase agreements, return multiples, and how proceeds were distributed

•       Conflict of interest policy: Request written policy on how the fund manages investments in the founders' alumni network

•       Follow-on reserve ratio: Ask what percentage of fund capital is reserved for follow-on investments and whether that reserve has been depleted by later-stage consumer bets

8.2 Red Lines for LP Commitment

Under no circumstances should an LP commit capital to Init-6 without:

•       Receipt of an OJK registration confirmation or equivalent regulatory authorization

•       Audited financial statements from an independent Big-4 or equivalent accounting firm

•       A formal fund document (Limited Partnership Agreement or equivalent Indonesian structure) with clearly defined investment mandate, fee structure, and GP carry

•       A written acknowledgment and explanation for the Eduka System portfolio failure

8.3 For the Indonesian Startup Ecosystem

This report highlights a broader issue in Indonesia's venture ecosystem: the near-total absence of mandatory public disclosure requirements for private VC fund performance, portfolio write-downs, and LP identity. Unlike public markets, private VC operates with minimal transparency, which can harm founders who rely on VC-affiliated signals of legitimacy and harm co-investors who assume that a named VC has conducted proper diligence.

OJK should consider mandating: (1) annual public portfolio status disclosures for registered VCs; (2) fund performance reporting standards aligned with ILPA (Institutional Limited Partners Association) guidelines; and (3) formal disclosure of founder-investor network relationships in investment documentation.
