Undisclosed Energy Enterprise
Azure Cost Reduction & Platform Modernisation
The challenge
An undisclosed state-owned energy enterprise was running an over-provisioned Azure environment with 90% uptime and no structured approach to cloud governance. Engineering bottlenecks caused by manual provisioning and a lack of AI-assisted tooling were limiting the team's output, while cloud spend had grown unchecked.
Our solution
Serving as Technical Architect and Product Owner, we right-sized virtual machines across the entire estate, redesigned high-cost services, and committed to Reserved Instances — cutting Azure spend by 51%. We rebuilt the core enterprise platform into a multi-module architecture and lifted uptime from 90% to 99% by implementing proper monitoring and incident response. We also deployed an internal Azure OpenAI RAG application (.NET 8, React) trained against enterprise policy documents, enabling the 20+ person development team to answer compliance and process questions instantly. An IT roadmap was presented to leadership projecting USD $50,000/year in sustained cloud savings and 10,000 man-hours reclaimed through workflow automation.
Impact
- 51% reduction in Azure infrastructure costs through right-sizing and Reserved Instances
- 90% → 99% platform uptime after architectural improvements and monitoring overhaul
- USD $50,000/year projected cloud savings presented to executive leadership
- 10,000 man-hours/year saved through automation and AI-assisted workflows
- Internal Azure OpenAI RAG app deployed — boosting compliance and productivity across the engineering team
- Led and coordinated a team of 20+ outsourced developers
