Bridgeplay Issue #2: The Early Attribution Review Raymond Chin Answered

Part 1 of the series on Raymond Chin's Bridgeplay, a GPL-3.0 fork of NotProton. On 21 October 2026 I opened issue #2 on the Bridgeplay repository: no violations, five small gaps. This part covers that review, the one gap Raymond Chin declined, and how it was finally closed. Built from public screenshots; not legal advice.

The early note: issue #2

Wine on the Mac depends heavily on CodeWeavers, the company that makes CrossOver and is the largest contributor to Wine. A free project built on their work is almost certain to raise questions about sustainability, so I asked first.

Then I opened issue #2 using public sources only. README, NOTICE, the licence file, the commit history and the site all named NotProton. What I listed as gaps were things outside the legal obligation. The first row was the promo post:

Issue #2, gap 1: the Bridgeplay Threads launch post links the site but does not mention NotProton

The Threads launch post read, roughly, "I made a free, open source, most seamless way to play Windows games on native Steam on your MacBook", without naming NotProton. I wrote that GPL-3.0 does not require naming upstream in promotion, but that people who only see the post may assume Bridgeplay was built from scratch.

Raymond Chin's reply: fast, polite, selective

Raymond Chin's reply to issue #2: two gaps addressed, the promo gap declined, issue closed

The site immediately said "Bridgeplay is a fork of NotProton", and a new document mapped each condition of Apple's Game Porting Toolkit licence. On the promo gap the answer was legally correct: the GPL does not require it, and the site, README and NOTICE carry the attribution. For me that was the first spark, because the gap that was not required was the one most people would see.

What improved after the storm

Raymond Chin replying under a third-party Bridgeplay promo: a fork of NotProton, built on CodeWeavers' Wine work; if CrossOver works for you, buy it

When another account promoted Bridgeplay, Raymond Chin wrote: credit where it's due, it's a fork of NotProton, it runs on CodeWeavers' Wine work, and if CrossOver works for you, buy it. The app now shows that credit on screen. Gap 1 from issue #2 was finally closed. The route was just expensive: anger, a block and hurtful words. As the Indonesian saying goes, sedia payung sebelum hujan: have the umbrella ready before it rains.

Limits and right of reply

Evidence is public screenshots as of 24 October 2026, with dates estimated from relative times. I am not a neutral party: I opened issue #2. This is not legal advice and does not judge anyone's character. The full list of limits is in the overview.

Right of reply. Raymond Chin, the NotProton maintainer and anyone quoted can send corrections to admin@infraloka.co.id.
