Ten Fork Manners: Lessons From Raymond Chin's Bridgeplay and NotProton

Part 4 of the series on Raymond Chin's Bridgeplay. Three lessons about early warnings and ten fork manners for fork makers, upstream maintainers and onlookers, drawn from the four days between issue #2 and the credits Bridgeplay added on 24 October 2026.

Lessons about early warnings
- The most useful warning comes before launch. Once a promo has spread, every fix looks like a reaction to pressure, however good the intent.
- "No violation" is easily read as "no problem". In issue #2 I meant legally safe. Relationally safe is a separate question, and from now on I will write it up separately and clearly.
- Upstream intent is not written in the licence. It is written in issues, in the README, or only in the maintainer's head. The best advice for anyone forking is to ask the upstream maintainer directly before launching.

| For whom | What helps |
|---|---|
| Fork makers | Talk to upstream before launch; respect written intent; name upstream in every promo; take upstream changes only after merge; test claims before calling them fixes; be open about AI use and how you test |
| Upstream maintainers | Criticise code, not people; write your intent in README and CONTRIBUTING; pick a licence that matches your wish. GPL-3.0 cannot forbid a free fork, and the Open Source Definition forbids discrimination against persons and fields of endeavour (items 5 and 6) |
| Onlookers and community | Don't pile on; separate arguments from detector scores; support upstream in real ways, for example by buying a licence if you can |
Limits and right of reply
Evidence is public screenshots as of 24 October 2026, with dates estimated from relative times. I am not a neutral party: I opened issue #2. This is not legal advice and does not judge anyone's character. The full list of limits is in the overview.
Right of reply. Raymond Chin, the NotProton maintainer and anyone quoted can send corrections to admin@infraloka.co.id.
